It’s the year 2019, and I believe we are all over stereotyping makeup and attaching it to a certain gender or group of people. Makeup is art, It’s a way of expression, It’s something far much bigger than ourselves, and although it took me a while to figure that out, now I have and It has made me such a new person.
I love, love, love makeup (maybe i should punctuate for more emphasis) I LOVE MAKEUP!!! It’s honestly one of the best things that has happened to mankind, but I’m not asking anyone to use the pro-makeup era as an opportunity to go on a movie date with the heaviest contour, or go to the beach with pitch-black lipstick (Thank you, Waterproof lipsticks!) I just want everyone to know the most essential items to have in their makeup kits, in any season and time.
We are going to start off with,
A Great Foundation
Honestly, I can’t emphasize the importance of foundation without making sure we all sleep right here tonight, Foundations are just great, they even out your skin tone, cover mild blemishes, and of course act as a canvas for every other item you’re applying. Foundation is the only makeup product I advise people to splurge on, you just need to get the best one, which has to be the right shade, fortunately, that can’t be hard these days, thanks to Fenty Beauty. You absolutely need a foundation with the right texture and feel, and of course, the one that makes your face look just like your face, (I’m tired of different face and neck colours, tbh!) .
Recommendations: I would recommend the Topface Instyle Foundation, It’s honestly my favorite foundation brand.
A Cream Concealer
Although the stick, balm and liquid concealers were created to satisfy different skin types and needs, I still swear by a cream concealer, It glides right on your skin, It’s perfect for covering under eye dark circles (the bane of my existence), and it always leaves you looking bright and refreshed, which is what we all want makeup to do in our lives. If you have breakout-prone or sensitive skin, be sure to purchase a cream concealer that’s oil-free, non-comedogenic and alcohol free.
Angel’s Two Cents: I’d like to use this avenue to take my stance on the never-ending debate of concealer before foundation vs foundation before concealer, I have tried it the both ways, and realized that applying foundation before concealer works so much better for me, and gives me the best results.
Recommendations: I’d recommend the NARS Radiant creamy concealer
A Matte Waterproof Lipstick
I say get one in a RED or NUDE shade, but then again i’m very biased towards red lipstick (the highlight of my life). Frankly, you could get any shade, type or style of lipstick that makes your heart sing, but I advise that it should be matte and waterproof, just so you know you can walk through seven rivers and seas and your lips would come out unburnt like Daenerys Targaryen.
Recommendations: I’d suggest the Maybelline Superstay matte ink liquid lipstick, I’ve been using it for a couple of months, and I must say it deserves several rounds of applause.
A Liquid Mascara
Honestly, if I could pick one item out of this list I couldn’t live without, it would be a mascara, Nothing makes your eyes pop like a voluminous mascara. Seeing my eyelashes flutter up and down gives me a confidence boost like no other makeup item, and I can proudly say I’m prepared to hold unto mascaras until my eyes drop to my chin.
Recommendations: I’d recommend the MAC Extreme Dimension Waterproof Mascara
A Bronzer/Highlighter
Lots of people swear by a bronzer, and other’s don’t, well i’m proud to say i’m a part of the former, I love a good bronzer, I love how tan it makes me look, and the sun-kissed radiance it effortlessly gives the skin, and of course, there’s always the warmth and glow a great highlighter gives your fully made-up look.
Recommendations: I recommend the Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Powder or the Becca Sunlit Bronzer, while for highlighters, you could never go wrong with an Avon True Colour Illuminating Sticks
A Brow Kit
I was never one to touch my brows, I still i’m not one to be honest, but I have seen the difference a great brow arch can definitely make in an entire makeup look (Hey, Kylie Jenner!), Yes you need a brow kit complete with brow pencils, brow gels, brow brushes, brow powders and tweezers in your makeup kit.
Recommendations: I would be doing a grave injustice if i don’t recommend the Anastatsia Beverly Hills BrowKit for anyone that wants to achieve the famous Insta-worthy perfect brows.
An Eye shadow Palette
Do I really need to write on why you need an eye shadow palette? Well, the world is too dull to not have a little colour on our eyes, We owe it to the 17th century to paint our eyelids with whatever colors make our hearts happy.
Recommendations: I recommend the Urban Decay’s Naked Eyeshadow Palette
Moisturizer and Primer
I just took a minute to think of who i’d be without a moisturizer, and the answer is no one, (Hey twin sister, Arya Stark!) Moisturizers are NECESSARY and anyone who tells you they aren’t wants you to walk around with badly done makeup, and they shouldn’t be invited to your next party cause they really do not like you.
Moisturizers prevent your skin from drying out and also increase your skin’s general moisture level, while primers act as a base for your makeup which allows the makeup go on smoother and last longer
Recommendations: I’d recommend any moisturizer with SPF, we do not need the sun ruining our beautiful faces now, do we? For a primer, I’d recommend the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Primer, (Don’t flinch at the name).
A Setting Spray/Setting Powder
Much like a face primer, A setting spray/powder helps to keep your makeup in place for as long as is necessary, preferably a day, like you’d literally have the same glow the whole day, there’s no gift better than that, in my opinion.
Recommendations: I recommend the Maybelline Superstay 24 Makeup-Locking Setting Spray and the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder.
A Reliable Brush/Applicator Set
My first tip is always to go out and get a durable and reliable brush collection before purchasing any other beauty product, It’s like buying so much food without any cutlery. A good brush set is a necessity, and it needs to contain powder brushes, concealer brushes, foundation brushes, blending sponges, contour brushes, eye shadow brushes, and eye brow brushes, cause nothing limits a makeup look like lacking the right applicators.
You also need to try to wash the brushes regularly in order to avoid what I call the ‘multi-faceted cake face’
Recommendations: I recommend the E.l.f. Cosmetics Beautifully Precise Face Brush Collection
An Eyeliner
You get an eyeliner, He gets an eyeliner, She gets an eyeliner, Everyone gets an eyeliner!!!
I must add that, despite numerous arguments with my friends, I still swear by a gel eyeliner as opposed to a liquid or pencil one.
Recommendations: I recommend the NYX Professional Makeup Gel Eye Liner & Smudger.

Makeup Wipes
After all is said and done, you’ve slayed to your class, you’ve turned heads at your office and you’ve batted your eyelashes at a party, now you have to strut your natural beauty as easily as you did with your fully made-up look, nothing ensures you get into every corner and crease of your face like makeup wipes, They are extremly, EXTREMELY essential.
Recommendations: I recommend the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes
P.S. All the recommended products are merely suggestions based on my experience with different beauty brands over the years and I’m proud to say that these are the products I can vouch for anyday, anytime.
